Amo il Caffè

It seems like I only ever blog at work anymore. I did mean to type up a post yesterday evening at home, but then I got caught up playing Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. I beat the game (finally!) on Saturday, but I’m intent on finishing up a few other sets of side quests before I go ahead and buy Revelations.

I’m drinking this ridiculous size of coffee right now. Last week, I went to Starbucks because I had a gift card, where I ordered a decaf coffee. They didn’t have any brewed, unsurprisingly, so they had to do this “pour-over” thing, and I ended up waiting about ten minutes for my cup. Because I had to wait so long, the barista gave me a coupon for a free drink on my next visit.

After class today, I decided to head across the street and use the coupon before going to work. I wasn’t especially tired or anything, but I decided I wanted some caffeinated coffee this time. I thought it might help my headache and stuff. I ordered a grande brewed coffee (that’s a medium coffee, for all you folks like me who don’t often frequent such high-class coffee establishments), and the barista was like, “Are you sure you don’t want a venti? It’s free!”

I thought about it for a minute… I SO don’t need that much coffee… “Alright, sure.” When I think about it now, it’s really not that much more coffee than a grande, and the cup is about the size of a regular old travel mug, but walking down the street with it, I felt absolutely ridiculous. :squint: I kept imagining what others might be thinking of me. “She must be really tired.” “What a loser.” “Bet she paid a fortune for that!”

I think it’s pretty interesting how the workers at all coffee shops are called baristas, not just at Starbucks, yet Starbucks is the only shop I know of that uses Italian words for their coffee sizes. (Besides “tall”, what is that? :P) My mom works at Caribou Coffee, and she is a barista. When she worked at Biggby Coffee, she was also a barista. They’ve got small, medium, and large drinks, though! I guess “barista” probably came before Starbucks’ fancy sizing terms and probably inspired them, rather than the other way around.

I turned in my first paper of the semester this morning. Well, it was my first paper if you don’t count the two fifteen-sentence compositions I have had to write for Italian, which I don’t. I don’t even count this as a paper, actually, but the professor called it “paper one”, so I guess that’s what it is. It was blissfully easy (oho? ;)). It didn’t require an introduction, thesis, or anything really. All I had to do was answer eleven questions about a research study, and all my responses total were not allowed to be more than three pages in length. I wrote it in maybe an hour this morning, before going for my gym run. I wish all papers could be like that! I mean, it’s not really that hard to write formal, analytical papers, but it annoys me quite a lot. When I think about how much I hate writing papers, I wonder why the hell I’m majoring in Communications. The content of the course is good, though!

Lately I’ve been feeling really… unintelligent. I do pretty well in class–not as well as in high school, but that’s to be expected, and my approximately 3.5 GPA is quite good in comparison to a lot of the students at my uni, but I still feel, for lack of a better word, stupid. I think a big part of it is my performance in Japanese. I do better than some people, but I forget vocab easily if I don’t use it often, and while I don’t have too much trouble picking up on new grammar patterns, it takes me a little while to get accustomed to them. Maybe if I can manage a 90% on my test on Friday, I will feel better about myself. My goal was a 90% on last week’s test, and while I only got an 88%, it was definitely an improvement from my 85% on the first test of the semester. I will exercise self-discipline and study a lot and in advance for this test.

For the record, the coffee did not help my headache. It’s not so bad, though. 🙂

  1. Haha I tend to do the same ^_^; Assassin’s Creed is awesome…I still need to work on my 360 versions of the game XD. Did you read the book?

Oh that’s nice of the barista to give you a coupon to compensate for the delay!

Haha I am really amazed at the serving sizes (especially for beverages) here in the US. But yeah if it was free I would probably get the venti. I doubt people would have thought that…but even if they did who cares…I personally don’t drink coffee but I don’t think like that about anyone else who drinks it.

I guess you are right about the history of “barista”. I haven’t visited enough coffee places to know enough lol. I always just go for mocha or hot chocolate XD.

That’s the easiest paper I have heard about O_o…lucky you! I hated papers with a passion when I back in college lol. I was in a techy major though hehe.

I think 3.5 is a pretty good GPA (out of 4 I am guessing). I was obsessed with mine (3.9) but to be honest in the end even if someone ruins it…in the real world your work speaks a lot more about your skills than anything else! Always aim to improve and forget about the rest. Good luck with your tests!!!

Sorry about the headache…hopefully it will pass away soon :). Oh and I am following you on twitter (cuteh0lic) ^_^

  2. Does it make you feel better to know that my GPA is a tad lower than yours? If I were you, I’d probably crunch if I took so many language classes. My brain would mix everything up and I’d screw up tests and papers. In what I do, I usually don’t have to memorize much, so you could say that I don’t know very much stuff at all. I’m sure that you’re not stupid at all. I hope that your first paper is awesome!

If only the people walking down the street knew that you got a free cup of coffee! They’d be so jealous!

  3. Yay for beating the game. It feels so good whenever we pwn’d a game. 😀

Ooo a coupon for free drink! Glad they at least compensated you with a free drink coupon. I’ve been in situations where I had to wait for a long time and not only the staff didn’t apologise, they were pretty rude about it too.

Hah! You got to do easy paper! I used to write long essays for exams and while I like stating my opinions on paper, but sometimes it gets too lengthy and I end up dragging the thing on and on.

Hmmm that’s the thing about languages. You need to keep practising it over and over and include it in everyday use. That way it’s better than rote memorising. Wish you loads of luck! 🙂

Ugh I hope your headache will go away soon! Strong coffee smell actually cause headaches for me. :s

    ——————-

I went to the bank and managed to get the password. It was supposed to be a really quick process but due to the ignorance of the staff it took about 20 minutes. :/
I wish your mom very good luck getting a job. You’re right, one has to push luck to the limit and submit loads of applications in the hope at least one can be snagged.

  4. Wow, I am awfully behind! I never finished Assassin’s Creed, but headed straight for Assassin’s Creed 2, which I still haven’t finished either. I am so bad at finishing games >_< I also have Final Fantasy XII and XIII on the side.

I haven't gone into Starbucks in awhile. I'm not really a coffee person, but I did frequent it when my old boss gave us all gift cards. The baristas probably thought I was an idiot since I always put my orders in as "small" or "medium," never bothering to learn the fancy Italian words 😛

I've always been fascinated by languages. I'm not sure why. I just like the sound of them. I've been in the process of learning Japanese and Arabic on-and-off for awhile now. Japanese is harder to practice for me since I don't know anyone who speaks it, but I picked it up faster from years of watching subbed anime and Jdramas. Arabic is a little harder since I'm way out of practice, having stopped being exposed to it at an early age. But my parents can speak it, so I can't wait to learn more and converse with them.

Good luck on your exam! I hope you get more than 90%! Dare I say, 100%?! 😀
